Summer Makeup Routine for Brown Girls

It may be cold outside now, but warm temperatures will be here before we know it sis! We gotta start prepping early. Y’all know how we do. We eagerly do an overhaul of our wardrobes in preparation for summer; we trade in our sweaters and boots for sundresses and sandals and look forward to days spent by the pool and nights out on the town. While it’s second nature to transition our closets through the seasons, let’s not forget that our makeup routines need some changing as well. Here are a few simple tips on how to get your makeup routine in shape to withstand the summer heat.

Prime time – Primer is a base that will give your products staying power without weighing down your skin. Note: Only use it if you plan on wearing some sort of foundation, otherwise, skip it altogether. Less is more when the temperature is enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, so don’t overdo it. How to: after cleansing, apply a small amount of a shine control primer to your face before applying your foundation. Black Radiance True Complexion Shine Control Primer is a great option that won’t break the bank.

Opt for a BB Cream in place of heavier foundations. Foundation can sometimes just be too heavy for warmer weather. And there’s nothing worse than foundation sliding down your face in the summer heat. So, switching from full coverage foundation to a BB Cream is a smart choice for summer. BB Creams (like Black Radiance True Complexion BB Cream) perform multiple jobs like coverage, moisture, SPF protection, and skin refining without the added weight of additional products. How to: after cleansing and priming, apply a light layer of BB cream with a beauty sponge or foundation brush

Only use what you need. If you have relatively clear skin, you may be able to go sans foundation or BB cream altogether. Applying concealer that matches your skin tone to any problem areas and setting with a little powder may be all you need to achieve glowing summer skin. How to: apply an SPF moisturizer and follow up with concealer, such as Black Radiance Concealer Stick, using a small concealer brush or your fingers, blend with a beauty sponge, and set with a light layer of setting powder to keep the concealer in place and soak up any shine from the moisturier. Keep your concealer with you for any retouches throughout the day and you’re good to go!

Switch to waterproof mascara and eyeliner and skip eyeshadow. Eyeshadow tends to be the first thing to crease during hot weather, so unless you really need or want to wear it, skip the shadow and go with a good lash and liner combo. You still have to be careful here, because just like foundation, eyeliner and mascara can break down and melt in the heat and nobody likes raccoon eyes. To combat this, add waterproof mascara (Black Radiance Waterproof Mascara is a good one) and eyeliner to your makeup bag and you’ll be good to withstand any sweat or heat that comes your way. How to: apply one coat of your regular mascara followed by two coats of the waterproof formula. This gives your waterproof mascara a regular base, and it will be easier to remove, not to mention achieving more voluminous lashes with the additional coating. Just remember that even with the regular mascara base, removing waterproof formulas requires more than just water, such as an oil-based makeup remover.
